| Mrs.
Amelia Bloomer was the editor of a feminist paper
called The Lily. One of the reasons she dreamed
up the bloomers is because of the cycling craze.
But as soon as she brought out the bloomers she
was the butt of many crude music-hall jokes.
In England, Queen editorialized in her favor: "The
wheel women of today and tomorrow are sharp,
wide-awake, aggressive, self-assertive. They
know no fear and what sense of shame they have
wears a different aspect froom their ancestors." The
picture is an illustration of the dress in the
1850's. |

The
bloomers became a hated symbol of women's rights'.
The actual dress consisted of a tunic dress
worn over loose trousers gathered harem fashion
at the ankle. The true origin of this was traced
by to the first quarter of the century when
women wore this type of outfit for riding.
At that time it was worn at Robert Owens' cooperative
colony.
